Larnaca’s palm-fringed seafront is known as the "Finikoudes". The name translates literally to “small palm trees” referring to the line of palm trees planted back in 1922. The adjoining beach is considered one of the most famous and safe beaches of southern Cyprus, around 500m long with fine grey sand.

The Finikoudes is conveniently centrally located along the costal road, Athenon Avenue, and is the city’s main promenade. It has become known as the lively coastal promenade with an array of picturesque multi-coloured umbrellas, attracting large crowds both day and night.

Its shallow waters are flanked by the marina and Europe square on one side and the Medieval Castle on the other. The organised, blue flag beach has multiple lifeguard towers, toilets, showers, changing rooms, sun-beds, umbrellas and recycling bins.

There is a performance stage on the beach which, together with Europe square, is used for various events throughout the year.

Most weekends and festivals, stalls are set up along the promenade selling street food and souvenirs.

During the week you can relax with a book on the beach and then take in the nearby museums and historical sites, lunch at one of the many eateries on the promenade, or simply wander into the city for shopping and restaurants.

Larnaca old town (Skala), Cyprus

A short walk from Larnaca’s palm-fringed seafront is the magnificent Saint Lazarus Church and the Medieval Castle that marks the end of the Finikoudes. Next to the castle is Djami Kebir Mosque, which marks the beginning of the old Turkish Quarter (the Skala). This part of Larnaca, with its narrow streets and two-storey whitewashed buildings, feels distinctly Old World and is home to artisan workshops including the Emira Pottery. Wander the narrow alleyways and stop for a traditional Cypriot coffee at one of the old coffee shops to savour the feeling of strolling backwards in time. Alternatively stroll down the purpose built walkway on the seafront and dine at one of the numerous restaurants, many specialising in seafood.
